The Ottoman Bedroom Empire

We know that space is a premium in your bedroom, and that it's equally as important to have storage wherever possible, alongside style, and that’s where our old friend the Ottoman Bed comes in. Its seamless ability to double up as an added container is priceless, and its hidden cavity provides the ultimate space for a multitude of your possessions. We’re going to look into the history of this magnificent bed, and to pick out one of our favourites for the colder months.

Historic Ottoman Origins

This iconic bed shares the name with its emergence in ancient Turkey, whose empire rose to prominence in the 14th century. The Ottoman Empire spread out over the following six hundred years, during that period it ruled modern day North Africa, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, alongside the Balkan States.

The original Ottoman furniture consisted of a form of upholstered bench or long seat that didn’t have any arms or back. Historically, this traditional piece was often used as the main seating for the home, plumped up with cushions, but sat low like a footstool with hinged interior storage. Larger pieces were also created which were higher, and featured deeper cavities. This was the style that was developed and modernised, using the Ottoman format for beds, chests of drawers and stalls. Ottoman furniture was exported to western Europe during the late 18th century, and has been developed over the past three centuries.

This brings us to the contemporary Ottoman bed design, which is a masterpiece in modern aesthetic and functionality. It has combined the flexibility of a Divan Bed and added more substance. All of Sueno’s Ottoman beds are available in sizes from a Single all the way up to Super King, and offer four times as much storage as a traditional Divan.
